In a climate of awakening of nationalist sentiments in Europe, Roma communities count more than 11 million people. Stolipinovo, Bulgaria, is the biggest European Gypsy ghetto. Historically subject to racial discrimination, its alleged 80.000 inhabitants have Turkish and Muslim cultural roots. In contrast with a strong community-based social structure and system of traditions, people are forced into squalid decay and daily social emergency. While diversities are perceived as wounds cracking national identity, Stolipinovo is a portrait of systematic discrimination in Europe in our century.
