The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is the oldest, and the most recognizable and iconic symbol of Budapest. Completed in 1849, it was the first permanent stone bridge to connect the two historic banks of the Danube: Buda and Pest—playing a pivotal role in the unification of the city. The bridge bears the name of István Széchenyi, a major supporter of its construction, but is most commonly known as the "Chain Bridge".
