Two decades after falling for Cuba’s vibrant spirit, I returned to find a nation in quiet crisis. In Havana, I met Juan Carlos—once a tour guide, now jobless and terminally ill—waiting with his nearly blind father-in-law for a pension that never comes. Many streets lined with garbage and long queues for food and medicine reveal deep hardship. Yet amid the decay, Cubans hold strongly to dignity. Their resilience endures, in their eyes grace and hope still remains.
