Oneirataxia

  • Photographer
    Mai Naito

Oneirataxia explores my childhood memories and imaginings of nature through photography. Inspired by daydreams in natural spaces, it invites viewers to connect emotionally with their environment. Photographs captured during walks are digitally layered into a single image, compressing time to evoke a tangible memory. Initially resembling a painting, the work reveals its photographic essence upon closer inspection. By blending photography with the emotive quality of historical paintings, Oneirataxia challenges the notion that photography lacks soul, emphasizing its power to convey human emotion.

Mai Naito is a photographer born in Osaka, Japan. In 2015 she moved to Brisbane, Australia to study and grow in a new environment while fueling her passion for capturing moments. Mai grew up in an environment blessed with nature and perceiving natural spaces through the lens of her imagination. Based on her personal childhood experiences of seeking beauty in nature, she developed an interest in expressing the emotional effects of natural spaces. Through this approach she aims to connect with the audience through this emotion, encouraging them to rediscover a deep connection between thems
