"Forbidden Fruit"

  • Photographer
    Mati Gelman

This diptych is an exploration of archetypal gender and sexuality. Adam symbolizing air and water—while Eve is symbolizing earth and fire. Together, they embody a contemporary form of Yin and Yang. Eve holds the central focus of power, challenging the traditional narrative of a passive female figure. Simultaneously, presenting Adam as white and Eve as black raises present-day questions about racial identity and tension, intertwining mythological archetypes with modern societal constructs. By showcasing the subjects’ genitals in bright red, the piece amplifies its focus on primordial creation.

Mati Gelman is a self-taught commercial and fine art photographer. Born in Hungary, he grew up in Israel, where he earned a Bachelors in Biochemistry and a Masters in Chemistry, before moving to New York City, where he discovered photography. Mati’s images explore sexuality, queerness, and human integration with nature, sparking a sense of unease. Originally a chemist manipulating matter and molecules, Mati now manipulates pictures and pixels in exploration of context and meaning.
