In Japanese folklore, foxes are said to take on human form. The two-tone color of the kimono, black and white, represents the duality between Ayakashi (Mystic) and humans. The red flower depicted is the Manjushage (red spider lily). This autumn flower blooms around the time of the equinox, symbolizing a period when the boundary between the afterlife and this world is believed to be at its thinnest. This piece combines Japan’s cultural elements into something both mysterious and beautiful.
