Invisible Cities addresses urban sprawl, one of the main causes of climate change. The images were taken in a native forest in Brasília, a modernist city where a strong social movement prevented the construction of more than thirty buildings. In this case, nature won over the city. Crossed by abstract and subtle signs of human intervention, the images suggest, in a symbolic way, a critical reflection. Is the city a threat? Are nature and culture opposites or can both be harmonized? How can we reconcile the social organization of the human species with the preservation of natural spaces?

José Roberto Bassul was born in Rio and lives in Brasilia. His photography turns to architecture and urban environment as an attempt "to draw thoughts, project desires and built spaces for the imagination". He has received several awards and his works has often been exhibited in festivals, galleries and museums in solo and group shows in Brazil and abroad. He has published two photobooks. His works are held in important private and public collections such as those of National Museum of Republic (Brasilia), Art Museum of Rio, Museum of Modern Art (Rio) and Museum of Photography (Fortaleza).
