Too Many White Bicycles

  • Photographer
    Francesco Lepre

Ghost Bikes are becoming far too common in major cities around the globe. Yet many people don’t know what they stand for. When a cyclist is killed, a bike is painted white and installed at the scene of the accident as a memorial to the fallen rider. I used to pass by them without a second glance. That changed while riding home on a cold, and rainy October evening. A driver ran a stop sign and I was struck by her SUV. After that, I realized, one of those ghost bikes, could easily have been for me. This work is a difficult emotional exploration of loss, and tribute.

I’m a freelance art director with a passion for photography. It began with the treasured family pictures my parents brought from Italy when we immigrated to Canada These snapshots of family and places from the past triggered strong emotions which no doubt had a great influence on me as a photographer. I enjoy working in both digital and analog formats. While digital photography offers limitless creative possibilities, there’s something about the tactile process of analog that transports me back to the excitement of developing my first photo in the high school darkroom.
