Reflections of The 50S

  • Photographer
    Jean-Marc Bara

While photographing near Times Square in NYC, close to the date of “Manhattanhenge”—when the setting sun aligns perfectly with the city’s grid—I noticed a gentleman crossing the avenue. Dressed in a plaid orange suit, thick-rimmed glasses, and a floppy Panama hat, he looked as though he had stepped straight out of the 1950s. Just as I captured the moment, a car with a shiny hood pulled up, reflecting the 1950s man not once, but twice, on its gleaming surface.

Jean-Marc's friends describe him as an organized individual with a passion for order. To him, photography is more than an art form—it's also a tool for understanding, structuring, and simplifying the world around him. In his street photography, Jean-Marc enjoys capturing candid moments that are interesting, funny, or ambiguous, keeping in a formal and aesthetically pleasing frame. He likes American photographer Alec Soth’s wording of the key ingredients: Light, Moment, and Magic. While street photography remains his central focus, Jean-Marc's work also expands to other genres.
