The Glass Border

  • Photographer
    Lilyan Aloma

My awareness of windows as portals of perception evolved from my fascination with reflection. Over the course of two decades I explored my intrigue through different camera formats, finally arriving at the freedom of my cellphone; embracing its spontaneity along with a new set of technological tools. While the glass that divides the contents of a window from the external environment is transparent, It is an actual physical partition, a border, yet we can see through it. Within the context of this transparency, I discovered a fresh dimension in my field of perception.

At the heart of my photographic work over the past fifteen years has been my fascination with Manhattan’s cityscape, and its constant evolution. Between 2003 and 2009 I had 3 solo exhibitions at OK Harris Works of Art, entitled, Mecca or Madness, Billscapes, and Deconstruction. My cityscapes have received recognition through national and international juried competition, and through public and private acquisition. In 2010, I was honored by the Aaron Siskind Foundation with an IPF Fellowship for my body of work, entitled, Billscapes.
