The photo is a study in contrasting lights and darks. A lone figure stands bathed in light at the center of the swirling curves of a dark staircase. The stark contrast between the light and shadow creates a sense of drama and mystery. The man's form is almost silhouette-like, his pose echoing the curves of the staircase. The viewer is left to wonder where the man is going, or where he's been. The endless descent of the staircase adds to the sense of mystery, leading the eye down into the darkness.
