“A Sign of Life” focuses on the infinite and cyclical nature of being. The subject of the photograph is a wall in Soho that was covered in torn posters. The name is derived from the blue dove like figure just above the center of the picture that appears to have something in its beak – something I imagined to be the sign of the olive branch told of in the story of the Great Flood. I used color, light, and compositional changes to manipulate the elements within the photograph as to express the paradoxical nature of that which is simultaneously in a state of destruction and creation.
Sam Rittenberg lives and works in New York City and the Dominican Republic. His primary interest is in the ability of a photograph to express the infinite and paradoxical nature of being. He is guided by the idea that every picture has the potential to be a portal to that which is ordinarily beyond us. Twenty of Mr. Rittenberg’s works have been recognized in international competitions, including the Annual Photography Awards, Chromatic Awards, Fine Arts Photography Awards, International Photo Awards, Neutral Density Awards, Refocus - World Photo Annual, and the Tokyo International Foto Awards.
