Frozen Lake

In the November of 2022 an unusual thing was occurring in the Finnish Lapland: The lakes froze without a snow cover. This made it possible to photograph the aurora with reflections during the winter time. One night in Kilpisjärvi we had a great display with multiple arcs of aurora dancing in the sky. It was a bit spooky walking on the fresh ice cover on the lake as you could see how deep under your feet and the lake was still making sounds as it was freezing.

I am a 27 year old aurora photographer from Finland. Having spent most of my life living in big cities of south Finland I felt depressed not being able to see the night sky properly due to light pollution, so I moved to the small communities in the arctic where dark skies are still a thing. I move frequently as I enjoy discovering new rural locations in the far north with each location having their own adventures and plan on creating a free astronomy club in Greenland.
