Stevens Creek Reservoir

  • Photographer
    Robert Claus

Part of a three-year project, these black and white photographs explore human impact on a reservoir in the foothills above Silicon Valley, where I live. By limiting myself to using only a smartphone, and working only in black & white, I wanted to spotlight the tangibility and immediacy of what I found, as I explored the reservoir. Old shoes, beer cans, and tires are only a fraction of what the receding water uncovered. And yet, these relics also revealed an unexpected beauty in their patterns, textures, and shapes—here was a visual landscape perfectly matched to my monochromatic approach.

An emerging photographer, Robert Claus has been exploring drawing, composition, and theater since an early age. Born in Germany, he relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area after graduating from the University of London. Mainly drawing on still life for his subjects, Robert Claus has also ventured into portraiture and landscapes. He has produced several book-length curated projects that cover a range of subjects. Now starting to exhibit his work in the United States, and abroad, he is actively seeking opportunities to share his work with a wider audience.
