Tiles had been one of the key attributes of the Soviet Union. All the surroundings were tiled. They lost their identity, history and memories. The dress from the photoproject is composed of the 25kg of tiles which fell off from the old buildings. The crashed tiles with sharp edges were carefully glued together. They lost their original look and gained a new meaning. With the invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine our life fractured into pieces. We learned to pull those pieces back together and create a “new self”. This “fractured experience” is hard to wear, but it strengthens us.
Art for Yana Gryniv is an opportunity to be heard and to encourage others to think. Her artistic path began with pottery and silk-screen printing, then she turned to stained-glass painting and later added painting, photography and installation art to her circle of activities. In 2022 in Vienna she founded a curatorial platform Art Contact Ukraine. The platform facilitates collaboration between artists, cultural/governmental/diplomatic institutions, and activists. The scope of activity is defined through conceptual art, burning issues and cultural heritage.
