In Finnish the word for northern lights is ”revontulet” and it directly translates to ”fox fires.” According to the old mythology when it runs along the tundra, the fox’s flaming tail sweeps snowflakes into the sky and the fur scratches the trees, setting the skies on fire. That is how the northern lights are created. One night in December I finally had the chance to meet this mythical creature. The most iconic fell of Finland "Saana" is located on the right. The bright moon was also high in the sky, nicely lighting up the landscape.
I am a 27 year old aurora photographer from Finland. Having spent most of my life living in big cities of south Finland I felt depressed not being able to see the night sky properly due to light pollution, so I moved to the small communities in the arctic where dark skies are still a thing. I move frequently as I enjoy discovering new rural locations in the far north with each location having their own adventures and plan on creating a free astronomy club in Greenland.
