Using in-camera effects to create the illusion of movement, "Suketchi Maiko" visualises a young woman's choice between duty and her desire. Typically in more conservative traditional non-western cultures, women have a call to duty, whether to the family, culture, etc. However, we want to explore the possibility that many young women may want to choose a different path than expected. Maiko's costume is made from paper to demonstrate the fragility of her facade as a dutiful woman, with reds contrasting her passion for her own want.
Geran and Michelle Raath opened a studio in 2021 specializing in conceptual portraiture. Michelle, with a diploma in Makeup Artistry and 15+ years of film industry experience, is the creative director and often models for their projects. Geran, with a BA in Production Design, focuses on photography and set design. Their images provide social commentary on themes like human rights and self-discovery, using digital compositing, in-camera effects, and traditional techniques.
