Lights of Japan

  • Photographer
    Andrea Lippi

From the large and modern cities of Tokyo and Kyoto to the sacred Mount Koya, Andrea Lippi's photos are enveloped in a surreal light. Like the mysterious and rarefied one that extends over Lake Ashinoko, or like the one elusive in the mists behind the Amanohashidate bridge. Andrea Lippi's photographs from the "Lights of Japan" series recall Hasegawa's china ink paintings, Ozu's nostalgic gaze, and the theme of emptiness in Zen culture, portraying traditional and modern Japan, in depth, with strong poetic and spiritual impact.

Andrea Lippi was born in Tuscany. He became interested in photography as a child and then dealt with it continuously from the age of 23, creating a darkroom. In 2015 he visits Japan starting a period of study on Japanese culture which leads him to face a second trip to Japan in 2016. After this new experience he publishes "Lights of Japan" with some of the most interesting shots taken in Japan. In 2018 he returned to Japan to inaugurate his "Lights of Japan" exhibition in Osaka, under the patronage of the IIC. In he travels to Japan to photograph the Nakasendo.
