The Hakata Gion Yamakasa is a Japanese festival celebrated in Hakata, Fukuoka City, in the first 15 days of July. Several teams of men will compete on how fast they can race around city streets carrying floats made of wood. The festival is believed to be more than 700 years old, and was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 1979.
