'Mother Africa' As a black Colorado USA born African American and Australian resident, Aurora Coulter is acutely aware of her heritage and the treatment of her coloured predecessors and forebears over the centuries in the United States and the Aboriginal peoples of Australia. The image was made to reflect an historical aspect of the treatment of indigenous peoples at the hands of colonialists, exposing their vulnerability … and a symbolic loosening of the ‘corset’.
