Honorable Mention in People / Portrait

I encountered Deborah outside Waterloo Station in London on her way to see a performance of the Nutcracker. Deborah’s mask, in combination with her wonderful hair style and rose, gave a mysterious - and somewhat haunting - appearance. This photograph is part of a series of street portraits I took in January 2022 of members of the public I encountered wearing masks for protection from Covid19 as they walked through busy pedestrian areas of Central London.

I live in South East London with my partner and son. My passion for photography started when travelling and volunteering in India, South America and Australia, where I made photo-stories and short films. In 2011 my photograph 'Boy in the water' won the Royal Academy of the Arts Eyewitness Photography competition. During that time I was working as a freelance photojournalist in London covering a wide range of stories and my work appeared in many publications including; The Financial Times, The Guardian, The Times. In recent years I have focused on documentary and street photography
