Each year before the winter, the paddy fields in rural bengal ripe and turn golden. This is the main cash crop of the season. Separating the rice from the straw is communal activity. The women of the village gather round and separate the rice by beating the ripe rice plants on a bamboo lattice. This winter during a visit to a local village, I came across a group of women engaged in rice separation. I captured the portrait of this working lady as she threw the separated paddy straw on the pile after the rice was separated.
