I marvel at the way in which a country like Egypt can upkeep its historical monuments while having to cope with so many other structural problems. What I found very fascinating was the way in which the monuments become the catalyst on which various dynamics are enacted: through tourists and international funds, the ‘developed’ world comes in contact with the reality of a ‘developing’ country, while Egyptian workers receive tips that are worth a month’s salary or more. This situation creates a set of nuances and shades of behaviours that shows all the resilience of the Egyptian people.
