A forgotten war keeps its slow burning in the East of Ukraine. More than 13 000 lives have been consumed by the flying metal and exploding soil of this war, which has been going on for almost 8 years. All these years patriotic Ukrainians kept creating armed volunteer formations to assist regular army in opposing Russian separatists. Who are these volunteers? What prompts their self-sacrificial decision to get in harm’s way? My series (total of 35 images) strives to answer these questions, as well as to look into the volunteers’ private life and their often-charismatic personalities.
