The picture was taken at Lake Tisza in the Hortobágy National Park, Hungary. I’ve been visiting this whiskered tern (Chlidonias hybrida) colony for years. In order to be able to take this photo, I first had to get familiarized with the birds’ behaviour. I had to find a distance which didn’t interfere with their comfort zone but was still close enough for me to take good photos. I captured the scene from this distance in a boat. The birds went on with their activities as if I hadn’t been there.
