Border Stories

  • Photographer
    Ekaterina Frolova

When countries are not at war, borders are often overlooked. The contrast tends to blur, becoming less linear, more complex, sometimes even intertwined. But silence is never neutral, and I believe it is vital to observe borders during the times when change is forming. Border Stories is an ongoing project, the first chapter of which documents life on the border between Italy and Slovenia, in Gorizia and Nova Gorica. I asked the people I met to draw the border the way they feel it, and the intimate sketches were later re-drawn by an illustrator, preserving the rhythm of every original line.

Ekaterina Frolova is a documentary photographer currently based in Limassol, with a background in journalism and cultural studies. Inspired by subtle controversies, she explores the complex relationships between people, space, time and our ever-changing environment. She is particularly drawn to capturing the energy of youth, viewing it as an enduring source of hope.
