The Poetry

  • Photographer
    Lynne Buchanan
  • Prize
Silver in Book / Fine Art

Buchanan began this series during Covid. Witnessing trees that survived illness gave her strength to continue caring for her dying mother. Nature reminded her existence is interconnected and the energy of dying lifeforms supports new growth. Images include traces of what was, the effects of climate change, and the cycle of life. The magic of light is a focus since it transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. Shadows are important since light is not be known without darkness. Printing with precious metals seemed suited for evoking how invaluable the natural world is for our survival.

Poetic climate photographer and poet Lynne Buchanan makes platinum-palladium prints of waterways and forests around the world. They show the natural beauty being damaged and lost, and the biodiversity and ecosystems that remain. Buchanan’s photographs have been featured in museums and galleries in the United States and Europe. She is the author of two books The Poetry of Being and Florida’s Changing Waters: A Beautiful World in Peril. She was a finalist in Critical Mass and received awards in the JMC and Pollux Awards. Her work has been featured in numerous publications.
