The Huaorani of southern Ecuador have been engaged in a constant battle with the various oil companies encroaching on their land. The companies claim that because the Huaorani live in small, isolated and far apart communities do not constitute a single tribe and as such, are not entitled to tribal protection. The community in Bameno are leading the fight and have started welcoming visitors in an attempt to share their culture and way of life with the world and garner support for their cause.
