Foreign Bodies explores how familiar garments can take on an uncanny quality. Old, discarded, knitwear is transformed using everyday materials such as cotton swabs, seeds, pasta, or rubber bands. These additions disrupt the garment's original form, giving forgotten clothing a new appearance. In the photographs, bodies remain partially concealed as clothing, object, and body merge into unsettling yet captivating shapes; this invites the viewer—through a sense of estrangement—to look at discarded or unworn clothing with fresh eyes.
In her projects, Hilde has a dialogue, playful interaction, with the photographic medium allowing happy accidents and technical imperfection. What is photography and what could be hidden inside the image during the making? Is unseen information captured and if so, how can to reveal? Contrast, the aspect of time and the in-between that is inextricably linked to photography are points of focus. Craftsmanship and the act of creation play a major role.
