So Far, So Close. In Search of Bering Island

    Bronze in Book / Documentary

This book is my attempt to restore lost connection with the place of my birth. Born on Bering island, I have no memory of it. The project is based on archival photographs taken by my father in 1967-70, when he served as Commander of the Border Outpost on Bering Island. The color photographs were taken by me on the same Soviet camera in the vicinity of Saint-Petersburg, the city in which I now live. I did it so that the time of action remains unclear. In this way I want to connect two different spaces and two different times. And through this I want to regain a sense of homeland.

Oleg Kolimbet is a visual artist with a focus on photographic work and the photobook. Born in Bering Island (Kamchatka), Oleg currently lives in St.Petersburg, Russia. In 2000- 2022 he studied documentary and post-documentary photography at Docdocdoc school of modern photography in St.Petersburg. In 2023 he published his first photobook “So far, So close. In search of Bering Island” as self-published limited edition. His work explores personal and collective memory, as well address themes of changes in cultural landscape and the impact of these changes on people.
