Students surf the bright blue waves created by the bioluminescent bacteria from the red tide at Scripps Beach adjacent to UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. San Diego's phytoplankton does not produce yessotoxin, and there is no public health warning associated with the local San Diego red tide.
