On 6 February, twin earthquakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.6 struck near the cities of Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep, Turkey, causing widespread disaster for hundreds of kilometres across the south of Turkey and northern Syria. Search and rescue teams from all over the world partnered with volunteers and local organisations to search for potential survivors in the rubble. Over 50000 people across Syria and Turkey died, whilst vast surrounding areas suffered severe damage to infrastructure, with an estimated $34.2 billion in direct physical damage.
