Through powerful black and white portraits and incredible surf scenes, Brown W. Cannon III's book NORTH chronicles the lives of surf people - and the community around them - along the North Shore of O‘ahu, Hawai‘i. For the past 6 years Brown has photographed portraits against a 10x20 foot seamless gray background. You are able to study every detail of equipment, their faces and feel their power. The large format (12.5 x 17 in) of this book transports the observer into the inner circle of the North Shore, making the strength of the waves and the people almost physically perceptible.
For over two decades Brown W. Cannon III has traveled to more than 50 countries photographing award-winning stories for editorial and commercial clients, including Travel & Leisure, Conde Nast, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, GEO Saison and Copalli Rum. His photography has been exhibited in solo and group shows in galleries and museums throughout the U.S. He is passionate about photographing culture, adventure, and conservation. In 2018, he founded no2plastic.org, a nonprofit dedicated to reducing single-use plastics. He divides his time between Oregon and Hawaii.
