Gold 2022 People / Self-Portrait
I was in a tremendous amount of pain when I took this image. I wasn’t aware of the tumours at that time. I didn’t feel too terrible at first to be honest, thought I would just do a quick shoot & play with the light.
My hand was trembling with the shutter remote and I knew it was going to kick off, I just knew it! Why now? No! I’m doing my shoot, pain, you are not going to stop me!
I pressed the shutter remote with tears streaming down my face. It’s hard to explain what pain feels like sometimes, but this is how pain looks. It’s not pretty, it hurts.
Hope is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in the performing arts. Now restricted by disability and chronic pain, self-portraiture and surrealism give her new avenues of expression. Her art spans the entire gamut of the human condition, often evolving in style but consistent in voice. From whimsical surrealism to the vulnerable glimpses of spoonie life.
