On February 1st, 2021, Myanmar’s military, the Tatmadaw, unseated the country’s democratically-elected government in a coup. The ensuing uprising that has gripped Myanmar since is taking place on two battlegrounds - the central cities where protests and civil disobedience among the professional class is crippling the military government; and the marginalised ethnic states, where the Tatmadaw’s renewed campaigns of war are being repelled by their long-disenfranchised inhabitants. The following images are a documentation of Myanmar’s struggle for democracy within its ethnic minority states.
