Mud Bogs are off-road races, popular in Western Canada, where men - and a few women - race vehicles through mud pits. Though the races are a spectacle, what intrigues me happens on the sidelines. There, drivers and enthusiasts examine trucks with their custom lift kits; families cheer their favourite driver. Friends share a cold beer, and local townspeople sell 50/50 tickets. Mud Boggers invest in this event not only with their money, but through time together creating a shared history. By building community, they experience a feeling of belonging in what sometimes can be a lonely world.
