"Extreme seductiveness is at the boundary of horror.”—Georges Bataille
The COVID-19 emergency led to unprecedented lockdowns across the world. New York was particularly badly hit, and as the year progressed the news was tragic and unrelenting. But in the early days of Spring the full scale of the event was still ahead of us. And yet, with the City slowing down fast, the mood was at once dull, apocalyptic and calming, reminding me of Bataille's prophetic words. The surreal vibe in the air was difficult to pin down and it became necessary to manipulate the colors to catch even a whiff of it.
