These picture is part of a larger body of work I am working on in South Africa emphasising the importance of sport as a means of unifying people of different backgrounds. Nelson Mandela used sport to unite a very broken country by supporting the springbuck rugby team in the 1995 world cup. This was seen as very controversial as rugby was mostly played by white South Africans and hence also loathed by blacks. Due to socio-economic reasons many of the black kids don't grow up with swimming pools at home and it still is very much a privileged upbringing that allows kids to get ahead in sports.
