Interview with Marina Overchuk
BIFA 2024 Winner, 1st Place, Professional Advertising“Light Is Inside”

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to embark on a career in photography? Was there a specific moment when you realized this was your calling?

I was born and raised in Kyiv, Ukraine. Art has been an integral part of my life since childhood. At the age of six, I created my first drawing and realized how deeply creativity resonates with me. Later, I graduated from art school, where I gained fundamental knowledge of composition, color, and form. This experience helped me better understand the beauty of the surrounding world. At the age of 19, I made a firm decision to dedicate my life to photography. Taking courses, practicing continuously, and collaborating with talented photographers in Kyiv became the solid foundation for my professional growth.

Q: What was the inspiration behind your winning project? How did the idea come to you, and what message were you aiming to convey through your work?

The photo series Lights Is Inside reflects the harmony between a person and the art of movement. The inspiration for this project came from Ilona Kravchenko, the principal ballerina of the National Opera of Ukraine named after Taras Shevchenko. The shoot took place against a white cyclorama, where Ilona, wrapped in flowing fabric, created mesmerizing shapes and forms. Her graceful movements and natural elegance brought every frame to life. I aimed to convey not only the refinement of dance but also the inner light of a person revealed through art. This project was not only a creative challenge but also a moment to rethink the power of art that inspires and unites.

Q: Every great story comes with its challenges. What were some of the hurdles you faced while capturing your award-winning project, and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge I faced while working on this series was the wartime conditions in Ukraine. Constant shelling and power outages made the creative process difficult, yet these hardships only strengthened my desire to create. They reminded me that, even in the darkest times, art can be a source of light and resilience. Other issues seemed insignificant compared to the goal of creating something beautiful and meaningful that could inspire and bring hope.

Q: What motivated you to enter the Budapest International Foto Awards? What does winning 1st place in your category mean to you personally and professionally?

The decision to apply to the Budapest International Foto Awards was driven by my desire to step beyond my usual boundaries and present my work to an international audience. It was important for me to see how my art would be received on a global level. Winning the competition and securing first place in my category has been an incredible honor. This recognition motivates me to move forward, explore new horizons, and reinforces the belief that art speaks a universal language that connects people worldwide.

Q: Could you share some insights into the equipment and techniques you used to create your winning images? Is there a particular tool or method you always rely on?

To create this series, I used a Canon 5D Mark III and a 70-200mm second-generation lens. Special attention was given to working with studio lighting. The lighting accents helped create depth and highlight the dynamic movement of the fabric, which became a key element of the composition. I always consider light to be one of the most essential tools in photography, as it sets the mood and shapes the frame.

Q: Looking back on your journey, what has been the highlight of your career so far? How does this award compare to other milestones you’ve achieved?

This photo series is one of the most significant projects of my career. It brought together my passion for the art of dance, photography, and human emotion. Working with such a talented individual as Ilona Kravchenko gave me a unique experience and allowed me to realize my vision of harmony between movement, light, and a person’s inner glow. This award symbolizes that even in the most challenging times, it is possible to create something meaningful and beautiful.

Q: What advice would you offer to emerging photographers hoping to make their mark in the industry? Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you wish you’d known earlier?

My main advice to young photographers is to not be afraid to experiment, make mistakes, and set ambitious goals. Mistakes are the best teachers, and challenges are opportunities for growth. It’s also important to learn to notice beauty around you, even in the smallest details, as photography is primarily about seeing. Persistence is another key aspect. There is no easy path in art, but belief in yourself and constant effort open up incredible possibilities. If I had known this earlier, I would have acted with greater confidence and boldness at the beginning of my journey.

Q: Photography is often described as a universal language. How do you approach storytelling in your work, and how do you connect emotionally with your audience?

Photography, for me, is a universal language that allows stories to be told and touches the soul. I always strive to create images that evoke emotions, provoke thought, or bring special memories to the viewer. In my work, I seek those moments that inspire, surprise, and leave an aftertaste. I believe that photography has the power to open new horizons of vision and transform perceptions of the world around us.

Q: If you could work on any photography project in the world, unrestricted by budget or location, what would it be and why?

If I had the opportunity to realize any project without limitations, I would travel the world to capture the harmony between humans and nature. My dream is to create a series that showcases the uniqueness of our planet through the interaction of people with their environment. My goal would be to draw attention to the beauty of our world and remind everyone of the importance of preserving it for future generations.

Q: What’s next for you after this incredible achievement? Are there any upcoming projects or goals that you’re particularly excited about?

After this victory, I plan to continue working on new projects that will allow me to further explore my creative potential. Every new project is an opportunity to push boundaries, experiment, and share my vision with others. My goal is to inspire people through my work, to show how art can unite, evoke emotions, and change perspectives.
