Interview with Ann Zhulan
BIFA 2024 Winner, 1st Place, Non-Professional Fine Art, “In Search of Light”

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to embark on a career in photography? Was there a specific moment when you realized this was your calling?

At one moment, I decided to turn my hobby of photography into a profession. However, I realized that I wanted something more than just mastering the craft. When I discovered art photography, it felt like a spark in my heart — I clearly understood that this was it, my place to express myself and create.

Despite all the hardships brought by the war in my country, I found a purpose and have been moving toward it with determination. Art became my guiding light, leading me forward with its glow!

Q: What was the inspiration behind your winning project? How did the idea come to you, and what message were you aiming to convey through your work?

Living through war is emotionally challenging. Daily anxiety, fear, and uncertainty reveal true emotions, yet it is in these moments that the desire to find a source of light emerges — a symbol of strength, faith, and hope for the future.

The idea for this project stemmed from an inner need to capture light as a reminder that it is always present, even in the darkest times. Through this work, I aimed to share a message: never lose faith, because as long as light exists, it will always guide us forward.

Q: Every great story comes with its challenges. What were some of the hurdles you faced while capturing your award-winning project, and how did you overcome them?

I believe that a significant role in creating this project was played by my inner emotional tension, which arose in the context of the war. This energy found its expression in the work. I often compare my projects to the birth of a child: when the time comes, you simply trust nature and the Universe, and everything happens naturally. That’s how I felt about the creation of this project — it became natural and organic for me.

Q: What motivated you to enter the Budapest International Foto Awards? What does winning 1st place in your category mean to you personally and professionally?

Participation in the Budapest International Foto Awards is an opportunity to share my creativity on an international level. The victory is important to me both personally and professionally. Personally, it is a recognition that my work can resonate with people, and professionally, it opens up new opportunities for growth, collaboration, and the realization of future projects.

Q: Could you share some insights into the equipment and techniques you used to create your winning images? Is there a particular tool or method you always rely on?

For me, what matters most is capturing the moment, the emotion, the instant that cannot be repeated. If I don’t have my camera with me, I’m always ready to use whatever device is available, like my phone. What’s important is not the technical equipment, but the ability to see and feel what truly matters.

Q: Looking back on your journey, what has been the highlight of your career so far? How does this award compare to other milestones you’ve achieved?

Reflecting on my journey, I see how each award, exhibition, and publication has opened doors to new opportunities. Key milestones in my artistic growth include being shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Award, Kamira Photo Award, and being featured in the book 100 Contemporary Ukrainian Photographers. Winning at the Budapest International Foto Awards 2024 marked my first major victory, reinforcing my passion and determination to keep evolving. This achievement inspires me to explore new horizons and deepen my artistic mission.

Q: What advice would you offer to emerging photographers hoping to make their mark in the industry? Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you wish you’d known earlier?

My advice for beginner photographers:

-Feel your calling.

-Find your people: mentors, teachers, colleagues with whom you’ll feel empowered.

-Trust yourself, pour your soul into your work — art doesn’t tolerate falsehood.

-Create and express yourself.

-If thoughts about photography lift you at dawn or keep you awake at night, you’re on the right path.

-Believe in yourself, even when the journey feels tough.

Relax, create, and enjoy!

Q: Photography is often described as a universal language. How do you approach storytelling in your work, and how do you connect emotionally with your audience?

For me, storytelling in photography is about authenticity and emotional resonance. I aim to convey universal themes through personal narratives, allowing viewers to see their own emotions and experiences in my work. I focus on capturing raw, unfiltered moments and translating them into visual stories that spark a connection.

By sharing pieces of my life, struggles, and perspectives, I create a bridge to the audience, encouraging them to feel, reflect, and find meaning. Photography becomes a dialogue, a universal language of shared humanity.

Q: If you could work on any photography project in the world, unrestricted by budget or location, what would it be and why?

Recently, I’ve been feeling that the themes of love and humanity are becoming particularly important to me. These are the forces that can warm the world even in the toughest times, and I want to express these feelings through my art. If my work can change even one person, it will mean everything to me.

Q: What’s next for you after this incredible achievement? Are there any upcoming projects or goals that you’re particularly excited about?

After this achievement, I feel inspired to move forward. I’m excited about projects related to love and humanity, and I plan to start with my family. My goal is to create works that touch the heart and continue growing as an artist, exploring new forms and possibilities.
