Interview with Ali Zolghadri
BIFA 2024 Winner, 1st Place, Professional Fine Art, “Confrontation”
Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to embark on a career in photography? Was there a specific moment when you realized this was your calling?
I have been drawn to visual storytelling from a young age. Photography, for me, is not just a medium but a language—one that transcends words and cultures. Over the past decade, I have honed my craft, specializing in fine art and minimalism, where simplicity meets profound depth. There wasn’t a single defining moment, but rather a series of realizations that photography is the most authentic way I can express my perspective of the world.
Q: What was the inspiration behind your winning project? How did the idea come to you, and what message were you aiming to convey through your work?
This project is a visual exploration of solitude and individuality amidst structured uniformity. The contrast between the ordered pattern of balls and the lone figure symbolizes the tension between conformity and self-expression. I wanted to create an image that prompts reflection—on how we navigate our own paths within societal frameworks, how we break away, and what it means to stand alone.
Q: Every great story comes with its challenges. What were some of the hurdles you faced while capturing your award-winning project, and how did you overcome them?
Minimalist photography, despite its apparent simplicity, demands precision. The biggest challenge was achieving the perfect composition and perspective to maintain balance in the image while conveying its intended emotion. Light and shadow played a crucial role, and timing was everything. It required patience, countless adjustments, and a deep understanding of how elements interact within a frame.
Q: What motivated you to enter the Budapest International Foto Awards? What does winning 1st place in your category mean to you personally and professionally?
I have always believed in the power of sharing one’s work on global platforms. Competitions like the Budapest International Foto Awards not only celebrate artistic excellence but also connect photographers with a wider audience. Winning first place is an affirmation of my vision and artistic direction. It is both an honor and a motivation to keep pushing boundaries in my work.
Q: Could you share some insights into the equipment and techniques you used to create your winning images? Is there a particular tool or method you always rely on?
I believe the camera is merely an extension of the photographer’s vision. While I use professional-grade equipment to achieve the highest quality, my focus is always on composition, light, and storytelling. For this particular image, aerial and high-angle perspectives were key. Precision in framing and post-processing to enhance contrast without losing subtlety was also essential.
Q: Looking back on your journey, what has been the highlight of your career so far? How does this award compare to other milestones you’ve achieved?
Every milestone is significant, but this award is particularly special as it recognizes my dedication to fine art minimalism. Photography has taken me on an incredible journey—from international exhibitions to personal creative breakthroughs. The highlight of my career is not just the accolades but the connections I’ve made with audiences worldwide through my work.
Q: What advice would you offer to emerging photographers hoping to make their mark in the industry? Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you wish you’d known earlier?
Stay true to your vision. The industry is constantly evolving, trends come and go, but authenticity is timeless. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that photography is as much about patience as it is about creativity. Success does not happen overnight, but consistent dedication to your craft will eventually lead to recognition.
Q: Photography is often described as a universal language. How do you approach storytelling in your work, and how do you connect emotionally with your audience?
I strive to create images that evoke emotion through simplicity. I believe the power of an image lies in what is left unsaid—in the space where the viewer’s own thoughts and emotions take shape. My storytelling is subtle yet intentional, allowing for personal interpretation and deeper engagement.
Q: If you could work on any photography project in the world, unrestricted by budget or location, what would it be and why?
I would love to create a large-scale fine art project exploring human solitude in vast landscapes—capturing individuals in minimalistic, surreal environments where nature and humanity interact in unexpected ways. The goal would be to create a body of work that speaks universally to themes of existence, space, and identity.
Q: What’s next for you after this incredible achievement? Are there any upcoming projects or goals that you’re particularly excited about?
I am currently exploring new conceptual projects that push the boundaries of minimalism in photography. Additionally, I am planning exhibitions in key international art hubs to further showcase my work. My goal is to continue evolving as an artist while bringing fine art photography to a wider global audience.
